Project Description

Disaster & Destiny: The Apollo Missions of Gene Kranz

As one of the original flight directors of NASA’s Mission Control, Gene Kranz experienced everything first-hand: the disaster of Apollo 1, the success of Apollo 11, and the mixture of disaster and success that came to define Apollo 13. But it was the deaths of three astronauts – Ed White, Roger Chaffee, and Gus Grissom on January 27, 1967 – that inspired Gene Kranz to examine his assumptions regarding the Apollo Space Program as well as his behaviors in the workplace. Immediately following the Apollo 1 fire, Kranz made a commitment to his team, as well as a commitment to himself. He committed to seeing every member of the Mission Control Team as a leader, not just as an expert in a specialized field. He committed himself to raising his standards, to being less controlling in the control room, and to building trust and connection between himself and each member of his team. This is the story of the personal and professional transformation of Eugene F. Kranz, Flight Director, Mission Control, Houston Space Center, NASA.
